The News Agency of Nigeria says that the police anti bomb unit were warned at about 1.30pm on Saturday of a suspicious box near a main hotel in the city.

The box was supposedly brought to the area by four boys, who tried to open it.

Meanwhile, the security guards attached to the hotel were said to have immediately alerted a police patrol vehicle positioned at the Dandima round about, very close to the Sokoto meat and vegetable market.

El-Mustapha Sani, the spokesman of the squad, confirmed the dismissal of the box by the men of the anti bomb unit.

“The box was just containing some empty packs and it was thought to have been stolen from the nearby sokoto central market by the boys.

“Actually, our men had opened the box which was locked with a padlock and it is now in our custody, and it is not a bomb.

“No arrest was made as the boys fled the scene, with one of them shouting bomb, apparently to divert the attention of the people, hence, evaded arrest,” he clarified.

The scare of Boko Haram attacks forced Kaduna state police to ban celebration of the end of Ramadan fast on July 17, Friday.

The Eid el-Fitr turned bloody yesterday in Damaturu after explosions carried by three girls went off at two Eid prayer grounds in the city, killing at least 13 worshipers.
